浮世絵an ukiyoe (print);a woodblock print (depicting the ways of the world)
浮世絵Ukiyoe is a style of painting or woodblock printing associated with the Edo period. Everyday life, portraits of famous people, and landscapes are among the most popular subjects. The advent of nishikie, multi-colored woodblock printing, gave rise to the golden age of ukiyoe. Among the many prolific ukiyoe artists of the period, Utamaro Kitagawa, Hokusai Katsushika, and Hiroshige Utagawa are the best known. When introduced to the European art scene, ukiyoe became a source of inspiration for the French impressionists and artists from other schools as well.(意訳:江戸時代の絵画の一つで,風俗・似顔絵・風景などを題材とし,肉筆画と木版画がある.多色刷版画である錦絵が作られてから黄金期を迎え,喜多川歌麿,葛飾北斎,歌川広重などが輩出した.フランスの印象派などのヨーロッパの美術にも影響を与えた)
