Otoshidama is a New Year's gift, often of money, given by elders, including superiors, to the young or to subordinates. It is the custom for parents, grandparents, and other relatives to hand out otoshidama money to children in small, decorated envelopes during the New Year's holidays. For this reason, New Year's family gatherings are one of the most highly anticipated events of the year for Japanese children.
