Hatsuyume, or the first dream of the year, is defined as the dream a person has on January 1 or 2. In the old days, it was believed that dreams were divine revelations, and people were eager to have good dreams at the beginning of the year. Dreams said to bring good luck are ones about Mt. Fuji, hawks, and eggplants, in decreasing order of value. It is said that sleeping with the image of a treasure ship under one's pillow on the night of January 2 will bring a good dream.
